How to check whether a season is open

  1. Find the exact hunting unit, fishing zone or federal bird district. Similar numbers do not mean the same boundary.
  2. Choose the species, date, hunting method and licence or residency category.
  3. Check named-water exceptions, special hunts, sanctuaries and current closure notices.
  4. Confirm licences, tags, bag limits and access permission separately from season dates.

InstaGuide™ distinguishes published open windows, closed windows, conditions needing a check and unverified dates. Its normalized data covers selected rules; an unverified result does not mean the season is closed.

When new regulations are published

Publication cycles differ by province. Alberta lists March fishing and July hunting releases. Québec updates fishing periods each April 1, alongside its edition cycle. Other province pages show observed review windows where a fixed future publication day has not been announced.

Federal migratory-bird summaries cover August through July. In-season notices can change rules after a guide is published; check the linked government source before travelling.
